The preliminary hearing of a charge against Mary Pearce that she did unlawfully attempt to murder one Jane lienwick by shooting her with o revolver was commenced at the Loiice Court to-day. The ease for the prosecution was that on October Pith Mrs Gray was visiting her daughter, Mrs itemvick, anil having occasion to pass accused’s house she mistook the door and knocked at Mrs Pearce’s door. Accused afterwards went to the mantelpiece and took down a revolver, and placing it it close to Mrs Renwick's facetired a shot at her. The bullet entered her mouth, made a wound iu her cheek, and emerged near the angle of the right jaw. Evidence to that effect was given by Mrs licuwick.

The evidence of Lionel Pearce, aged it) years, was to the effect, however, that Mrs Gray forced her way in, and that Mrs Eemvick on her arrival caught his mother by the collar. The latter then caught Mrs lienwick by the hair, and that utter hi.s mother let Mrs licuwick go the latter caught his mother by the hair and the throat, and forced her against tiie mantelpiece. She struck his mother a heavy blow, knocking her against the wall. He then heard a shot, and saw ttie revolver in his mother's hand. The case is not yet concluded.
