Auckland, last night. A Committee of the Chamber of Commerce appointed to take evidence of exporters with reference to the effect of the Federal tariff on Auckland industries, received the views of about ffO gentlemen representing different industries. The consensus of opinion was against New Zealand showing a spirit of retaliation, practically all being of tho opinion that so far as Auckland was concerned the effect of the new tariff will not bo very much felt. The representatives of the timber trade being asked to report separately, was not represented. The Chamber’s report and evidence will be sent to the Premier.

I [By Telegraph Press Association.] | Christchurch, last night. ) ®ie Chamber of Commerce has passed the following resolutions, rc Federal tariff, Tnat this Chamber being oi opinion that the highest form of statesmanship would be manifested in the fostering and developing of the commercial relations between two such continuous and imperially united countries as Australia and New j Zealand, strongly deprecate any course of i action such as the imposition of proi hibitory duties that might tend to diminish trade between the two countries or to lesson the good-will that has hitherto existed between them ” ; “ That it is in the opinion of this Chamber that the Federal tariff should be. met by New Zealand seeking new and permanent markets for her produce rather than bv imposing special tariff with the avowed j object of retaliation.” i
