GIFT FROM AN ANONYMOUS HONOR.

A portrait of Queen Alexandra is to bo painted for the Auckland. Art Gallery by on eminent English artist. A letter had been received from CL G. Anderson, of the Oratory Studios, Fulham road, London, stating that ho had received an order from a New Zealand gentleman, who did not at present wish his name known, to paint a portrait of Queen Alexandra, in order to present' it to the Auckland Art Gallery. The writer said he would be glad to hear that the offer was accepted by the Council, so that he might set about procuring sittings from the Queen. The Council decided to accept the gift with thanks, and to inform the artist that the Council would prefer Her Majesty’s portrait painted in her State robes. Dr E. Robertson has donated to the City Council for the Auckland Free Library two valuable letters of historic interest, written by the late Sir George Grey, to be placed with other letters in the Grey collection.
