OBSERVANCE OF THE SABBATH.
PUBLIC MEETING AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

A largely attended public meeting was held to-night at the Presbyterian Church of those interested in taking stops to maintain the sanctity of the Sabbath day. The Presbyterian, ATethodist, and Baptist clergy were represented. Kesolutions were carried, viewing with deep concern the growing desecration of the Lord's Day, and deploring the general disposition to turn the day into one of pleasure. A deputation was appointed to ask the Borough Council to refuse permits for Sunday concerts in the theatre ; also to urge the Christian people of New Plymouth to use every etiort to conserve the Sabbath, and both by precept and example to maintain the sanctity of tile Lord’s Pay.
lies'. Serpcll (Wesleyan), in moving this, said he stood to plead for tile Christian Sabbath. What was wanted was a healthy Christian conscience to be brought into existence. The Christian religion depended on the Christian Sabbath. The book of sports had done more harm to religion than anything else. He referred to the temptations that youth was exposed to. and the need for parental example in observing the sanctity of the Sabbath. He was not afraid of open attacks, but he was of our legislators, and theatres, and leading citizens who openly desecrated the Sabbath.
