A NARROW ESCAPE.
STEAMER STRIKES A REEF
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night. The steamer Elmville, a large timbercarrier, chartered by the Kauri Timber Company to carry timber to Australia for several trips, two or three of which she has already made, arrived at Kaipara Heads on Monday. Near Tokatoka she struck with considerable force a reef of rocks which runs out near Green Hill, below Tokatoka. The vessel was coming up at about half-speed. She did not come to a standstill, but proceeded to Aratapu, where a survey was made. Several holts have been loosened. A thorough examination shows that the injured plates are in the water-tight compartment, where the cement lining is damaged. The latter has been removed where necessary, and fresh cement put in. Permission has been given for the vessel to load for Melbourne, where the necessary repairs eau be effected.
