THE ROYAL VISIT.
A QUIET SUNDAY AT LAST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, May 25. The Royal train reached Honeysuckle Point station from Brisbane at noon. The party were welcomed by Lord Hopetoun and the State Premier, and the Mayor of Newcastle. There was a large gathering of residents. The Mayoress presented to the Duchess a beautiful bouquet with a gold gold and opal holder, from the women of the city, one streamer bearing the greeting “ Many Happy Returns of the Day,” to-morrow (Sunday) being the Duchess’s birthday. Twelve hundred children sang the National Anthem, and the party then drove through wildly enthusiastic crowds. The route was beautifully decorated to Newcastle station. En route 5000 children sang “ Rule Britannia.” The royal party rejoined the train, and reached Hawkesbury Bridge at three o’clock. There they boarded the steamer General Gordon, and were conveyed to the Ophir, lying down the river, where they spend a quiet Sunday, and come to Sydney on Monday.
ROYAL SABBATH-BREAKERS. .’ ebgoiy’a —Press A isolation—Copyright Sydney, May 26. About fifty of the Royal party, including the Duke and Duchess, went for a picnic to-day up the Hawkesbury River, in the river steamer General Gordon, The cruiser Juno fired a salute in honor of the birthday of the Duchess. Salutes were also fired from the forts and warships, including the Russian warship Grosnoboif at Sydney, in honor of the occasion.
The outlook for to-morrow’s function is unpromising. The sky to-night (11.30 p.m.) is completely overcast-. Rain.has been falling for the last couple of hours, and there is every prospect of more. As there is no great rush of visitors from the country or other States, there is not likely to be so great an attendance as at the Commonwealth celebrations. The decorations arc practically complete, except for a few final touches tomorrow. A GREAT DISPLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, May 25. The Premier states 'that the military display which is to take place at Christchurch during the Royal visit will be on a larger scale than anything of the kind ever arranged in the colony. The parade will comprise troops from Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Nelson, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. Members of contingents who have returned from South Africa will also be paraded.
DUNEDIN’S TROUBLES. [By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. The Royal Reception Committee considered the question of denuding Otago' of volunteers for the demonstration at Christchurch, . which it was considered would produce most unsatisfactory results for the local demonstration, and materially interfere with the success of the various arrangements.' It was resolved that the Committee strongly objects to the Otago and' Southland volunteers and cadets being withdrawn from Otago and Southland,
