KAITI’S PROGRESS.

PROPOSED PUBLIC HALL. A largely attended meeting of residents of the Kaiti was held at the residence, of Mr H. Walker last evening, there being present :—Messrs A. F. Bridges, Hicks (2), G. Moore, Cogar, Hay (2), S. Liddell, W. Fear, H. Walker, A. Hansen, J. Foster, G. Herivell, J. Fj’son, G. Shennan, B. Bott, Tennant, Coe, McConville (2), Murray, Driller, and Brosnahan (2), besides a large number of junior members of the community. Mr Bridges was voted to the chair, and explained the purpose for which the meeting was called. He said the progress made by- the district warranted the step being taken, as at the present time there was no place where meetings or amusements of any description could be held. When they desired to discuss any matter of importance to themselves they had to rely on the kindness of the settlers. He hail much pleasure in proposing that a public hall be built. Mr Liddell seconded the motion.

Mr Hay said that a hall was much needed. He was one of those appointed to draw up plans and estimates, which, together with Mr Walker he had done. A hall 40ft by 25ft, with I2ft stud, would cost £l5O, and seat close on two hundred people. Mr Walker said, in drawing up their estimates, they had not provided for a couple of ante-rooms, which were necessary, and would cost about £35, bringing the total cost up to .£lB5 (estimated). After considerable discussion as to the size of the hall, it was decided to erect one according to Messrs Walker and Hay’s plans (40 x 25). Several gentlemen offered to do the carpentering and plumbing work free, for which they were heartily thanked.

Offers of sites were received from Messrs W. D. Lysnar, F. Hieks and R. Little, and after considering the respective merits of the terms and places ofiered, it was decided to accept that of Mr Hicks (a quarter acre for ten years free, after which period the trustees could purchase same for £25). In regard to finances, Mr Bridges favored a limited liability company, as otherwise there might he considerable difficulty in raising sufficient money to equip the hall. After a good deal of discussion it was resolved to form a limited liability company, and on the motion of Mr Cogar it was decided to make the capital L-100 (shares to be LI each), £250 to be called up, as follows : as on application, 5s on allotment, and 2s 6cl each at not less than a month’s interval.

A committee, consisting of Messrs Bridges, Cogar, Hay and Harris, were appointed to draw up articles of association, etc., to be submitted to another meeting of settlors,

Mr Cogar was elected Secretary, and promised to do all in his power to further the objects of the' meeting. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Lysnar and Little for their generous offers of sites, also to Mr Hicks for the very liberal way in which he met the settlers in the matter.

Mr Walker was heartily thanked for the use of his residence for holding tho

meeting. The meeting was adjourned until Tuesday next, when the committee appointed will bring forward all the necessary details re forming company.
