ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

THE MAGNETIC BASE. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Christchurch, last night.

By last English mail the Hon. C. C. Bowen received a letter from his brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society, stating that arrangements had already been entered into to make the magnetic base of the Antarctic expedition at Melbourne. If, however, the magnetic observatory was established at Christchurch in time, he thought Lyttelton would bo a better place •for headquarters, as it is five hundred miles nearer the scene of operations. He did not know whether tho arrangements in regard to Melbourne had not gone too far to make tho change, but thought that Lyttelton would be preferable.
