LABOR DISPUTES
ALLEGED PUNISHMENT OF MEN,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)'' Dunedin, last night. The Arbitration Court to-day had the matter of the enforcement of awards before it. The Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Union withdrew their application, as some arrangement was being made. In the ease of the Kaitangata mine, an adjournment was granted. The Union had declined to furnish details when applied to by the Company, alleging to-day that this was because the men were afraid of being singled out and victimised. The President decided that the particulars applied for by the Company should be supplied. The information ought to be given, so that the party said to have offended might have some opportunity of defending himself, as if the proceedings were taken in other Courts with reference to singling out and punishing men complaining. The President said that if it was proved to the satisfaction of the Court that any employer had, in consequence of a complaint brought in a legitimate way, been treated in a manner thought not to 'be correct, he will visit such offence, if proved, very severely indeed. The Court will protect all parties'.
Mr Watson, manager for the company, said it desired not only to comply with the Act, but to bo kinder than the Act.
The decision in the case against Christie Brothers for not balloting for all places was reserved.
