He made an •indifferent display, which was not to the liking of backers. THE EX-JUDGE. Ex-Judge Martin, who arrived at Auckland on Monday last from Sydney, and will probably take up the practice of his profession in this city, is an able barrister, and before his appointment to the judicial bench ho was a most successful pleader in South Island. Those who were best acquainted with the inner history of his private life, and who knew the circumstances that prompted the serious step he took, have shown strong sympathy with him throughout the singular developments of his case,’ and it is on their advice that lie has resolved to return to New Zealand instead of making his home amongst strangers. s HON. J. CARROLL. The Hon. James Carroll’s visit to Gisborne has been delayed owing to a severe cold and sore throat. VICTORIA DAY. The Premier states that no arrangements have yet.been made regarding the programme for Victoria Day, on the “24th inst. It is already gazetted that all postoffices will bo closed as a mark of respect I for the late Queen Victoria. The Commandant’s office advise that the matter is under consideration.
