A Maize Question.
The following letter lms been sent to all the farmers and maize growers throughout the Opotiki. Opouriao. and Whakatane districts : . , Dear Sir—lt has long been recognised the present method of disposing of our maize in the Auckland market has led m luanv cases to great loss, and nccessart lowering of prices. While fully recognising that the law of supply and demand must in the main regulate the price, it is believed that steps might be taken to prevent the needless loss and cutting of puces which the present want of system entails. With the idea of putting the maize business on a more satisfactory basis, it has been decided to bold a representative meeting of farmers and growers m the Town Hall. Opotiki. on Saturday, May 4th. Circulars have been sent to all the farmers throughout the Opotiki, Opouriao. and Whakatane districts, asking them to be present, in order that this all-import-ant question may be thoroughly discussed. , , , , Among the proposals that. hat e been made are the following : (a) Limiting the number of agents to whom maize is to be consigned. (b) The desirability of grading maize before shipment. . , (cl To incraasc the consumption ot maize generally, by bringing its man} and j varied uses under the notice of the people of the colony. , . . , As it is advisable that the subject be discussed from every point of view, any further suggestions or proposals that you wav wish to bring before the meeting \\ ill be welcome. , _ ~,. S. A. Westney, President of Opotiki A. & P. Association. E. E. Chapman, President of the Fanners' Union.
