PERSONAL.

The Hon. J. Carroll left for Auckland and Rotorua yesterday morning. The Hon. T. Y, Duncan left for Wellington by the steamer last evening, Mr R. H. Mason left for Napier by the Waikaro last last night, Mr and Mrs E, Chrisp returned to Gisborne yesterday after a trip to Stewart’s Island.

Mr J. Fortune, the Secretary of the Union Rowing Club, remains in Gisborne for a holiday until Sunday next. Mr Harman, private secretary to the Native Minister, went on to Auckland yesterday in company with Mr Carroll. One of the competitors in the chess tournament is a former resident of Gisborne, Mr J. O. Barnard.

Mr 11. N. Jones, who has been visiting Te Aroha and Rotorua, on* a holiday, returns to Gisborne by the steamer orj Sunday!

Mr T. Smith, the well-known wellborer, was a passenger by the Waikare last night, on his way to Grcymouth, where he has engagements to bore for coal.

Mr Rodges, Dunedin’s new City Engineer, just over from Adelaide, was a through passenger for the South by the Waikqre last night. Mr C. Evans, a Gisbornite, and now holding an important position on the fine steamer Waikare, took a run ashore last evening.

Mr P. Wright, a dirootor of the Central Dairy Company, is about to visit the Motu, and will advise the settlers on the prospect of dairying in that district. Mr J. Stewart, the engineer in charge o the Gisborne-Karaka railway line, is, wc are pleased to hear, steadily regaining his health.

Even the anti-Government Wellington Post approves of the appointment of Colonel Porter to the command of the Seventh Contingent, and says that it is ono of the most popular appointments made.

Mr Barton, S.M., accompanied by Mrs Barton, returned to Gisborne yesterday after a few days’holiday in the Palmerston North district.

Mr G. Barton leaves on Sunday for Napier, where he is to take the place of the Napier Receiver of Land Revenue while that officer is away cn his annual holiday. Dr Pomaro is vigorously prosecuting his work in this district in regard to sanitation among the Maoris, and the natives are responding with good grace. The following have booked through Cook’s agency for London : —Rev. E. Webb, by the Afric, leaving Sydney first week in May ; Mr J. Mason, by the Orizaba, leaving Sydney 11th May ; Mr A. Whtitaker, by the Cusjco, leaving Sydney 14th April. ''
