[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. It has been definitely decided that Lieutenant-Colonel Porter takes the Seventh Contingent as far as the Cape. The Seventh Contingent went this morning to Trentham in flying column order, and will spend the rest of the week in camp there, inarching about the rough country, skirmishing on the hills, and practising at the butts. The New Zealand Rugby Union starts the new year with a credit balance of about £4O. The Committee of the Union is negotiating for a visit from a New South Wales team during the coming winter under conditions expressed by a majority of the unions last year. It is proposed that another conference of referees should be held in Wellington this year. There were 20 disqualifications and 14 appeals last season.
The Engineer-in-Chief has been instructed to advise the Auckland Harbor Board in the matter of the erection of the huge s’ncer-legs required at the Calliope dock.
The Minister of Public Works is confident the Makobine viaduct will be completed and trains running to Mangaweka in twelve months.
The Premier is advised that Trooper J. Lamont, of Oamaru, is dangerously ill with enteric fever at Potchefstroom. Oamaru, last night.
The Ariadne lies broadside on to the sea a mile south of the Waitaki river. She is working a good deal. The Mail correspondent says the copper from her bottom is coming off, and the chances of floating her seem remote. It is stated that the crew were unfamiliar with the coast, and were misled by a high bank extending along the neighborhood. They were ashore before their position was realised.
Blenheim, last night. The .£IOO handicap of the Marborough Gun Club was won by J. Greig, Blenheim, who shot 16 birds. J. Broderick, "Wellington, was second and third, taking £25 in sweeps. McViniss and H. Cheeseman divided £l7, Annandale and Horton £9, Greig, Eccles, Annandale, and G. Cheeseman £lO.
Invercargill, last night. The proprietorof the "Wyndham Farmer was to-day charged with a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act by publishing an advertisement inviting the public to take shares in a Melbourne art union. As he withdrew the advertisement when spoken to by the police, a conviction without a fine was recorded.
Nelson, last night,
At the Education Board meeting today it was decided to point out to the Minister that Nelson and the West Coast are not represented on the Eoyal Commission on Education, and to ask that representatives of the Nelson educational district be appointed. The Government has in the main agreed with the Board’s proposal for allocation of the special grant ■for salaries.
