MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Gisborne Mutual Improvement Society was held last evening in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, Mr B. N. Jones (President) in the chair. A letter was read from Mr W. H. Trimble (a former member of the Society), wishing the Society a prosperous session, and enclosing papers suitable for discussion. Tho Secretary of the Coromandel Mutual Improvement Society wrote, reciprocating friendly greetings, and forwarding syllabuses and a printed journal of their society. The Treasurer presented the balancesheet of the annual picnic held on November 9tli. —On tho proposition of the President, seconded by Mr Johnston, tho balance-sheet was adopted. The President stated that owing to Miss Mills having left the district a vacancy had occurred among the vico-President-ships. Mr R. Johnston was then elected to fill the vacancy. Through Mr Johnston’s elevation to the vice-Presidentship, a vacancy occurred in the committee, and on a ballot being taken Mr C. H. Ferris was elected.
The matter of opening tho session was next considered, and on the proposition of the Secretary, seconded by Mr H. H. Aainstrong, it was decided to open on April 15th with a concert, to take place in the Academy of Music, the price of tickets being fixed at one shilling. A committee, consisting of Misses Georgeson, Jones, ( and Somervell, and Messrs Johnston, Armstrong, Ferris, Driller, East, Sheridan, Smith, Gaudin, Jones, and Nasmith, were appointed to make arrangements. It was decided that the Concert Committee meet‘next Monday evening ; the General Committee to meet -the same evening to arrange the syllabus for Api’il.
