KAITI ROAD.
(To the Editor of the Times.)
Sir, — I am astonished at “ Ratepayer ” ; if he is not content wit'.: a good metalled road and a pathway on each side, howcan he suppose those using the Kaiti Beach Road will be satisfied with such a quagmire as it is.
In regard to Mr Joyce’s letter, his statement is perfectly true, but I complain of his consenting to the question being put off to the next meeting.—l am, etc., H. Partington.
(To the Editor of the Times).
Sir, —“ Ratepayer ” hits the nail on the head when he says that Mr Partington wants a lot, and his remarks about Childers Road are also to the point. It has struck me very much of late that if you want a good road to your house you must go on the Council. Compare the state of Childers Road and footpath to those of Palmerston Road. The latter is beautifully asphalted and kept clear of rubbish, whilst Childers Road is overgrown with grass and weeds in great profusion, the natural course for the water being along the middle of the path. Councillors Kennedy, Lewis, Nolan, Skeet, Hepburn, and Johnston are certainly to be complimented by the residents of Palmerston Road for the manner in which they have looked after that road, but surely it is time the other side had a show. Crs. Jones and Joyce appear to devote their whole time to the Taruheru Bridge, and the Mayor’s City of Gisborne ends at Peel-street. There only remains Cr. Harding, who wants better lighting for the Borough. Were it not for my excessive modesty I would offer my services to the electors at the coming election and endeavour to lead them in the right path ; but I am afraid that a man of my ilk would fare very badly amongst a lot of local men, who apparently only seek civic honours that they might have a good road to their homes and a light at the corner to show them the way.—l am, etc., Flashlight.
To the Editor of the Times. Sir, —As an aid to the efforts of the Beautifying Association to get an easy ascent to tho Kaiti hill, I certainly think that the Borough Council should stretch a point and put the Kaiti road in order. What is £SO or £IOO to a borough of such pretensions as Gisborne ? It is a mere flea bite that should not stand in the road of such a necessary work. If there is that confidence in the future of Gisborne as one hears on all sides, the small expenditure necessary to keep open one of the living lungs of the township should not frighten us. A fresh election is coining along, so let us turn out the whole Council and get a party able to copo with the requirements of the twentieth century, men who will not expect us to run our Borough Council on the lines of a Benevolent Society and pound for pound subsidies.—l am, etc., A Would-be Candidate.
