DESTRUCTION OF TIMBER.
OTHER PEOPLE COINCIDING WITH MR WHINRAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Industrial Association entertained Messrs R. Hannah and T. Ballinger, who are about to visit England, at a farewell dinner last night. Among tho speakers at the dinner was Mr Chalmers, the leading cooper and manufacturer of butter boxes, who referred to the fact that enormous quantities of white pine timber were being destroyed every year. In the Wairarapa alone thousands of acres had been destroyed which, if standing to-day, would be very valuable. Ho had been assured by an Argentine merchant who tried a great many varieties of American timber that for butter boxes nothing was found to suit like tho New Zealand white pine. The speaker stated that in Wellington alone 200,000 cases were annually made from this timber.
