What some peqplo regard as a meaning coincidence is that the telephone wire \yas severed during Monday night or Tuesday morning, The wire was down a few miles on the town side of Pakarae. Reports are current that tho culprits are well-known hands at tho gamo. On Tuesday morning, the police at Tolago thought they had a clue to the perpetrators of the thefts, but they were prevented from following it up promptly owing to the wire being down, and there ’ D g-' — no means of communicating by telegraph. However, instructed two gentlemen, who were about to proceeu Gisborne, to teifcphqne from the nearest station to the Gisborne* police to be in readiness at the Turanganui bridge for the arrival of the suspects. On reaching TatapSuri, the two gentlemen duly sent information to the town police, but little did they, anticipate the sequel. An hour later, they were themselves bailed up on the bridge on the chance that they were the parties wanted! The affair was regarded as a good joke, and the two gentlemen will get “ chaffed ” for many a day to come when their friends 'hear of the adventure.
