THE HON, HEMI KARA.
HANA’S SOUL IS TROUBLED. DON THE TOEOA’S PLUME. [Special to Times.] Auckland, last night. Hana Hutana, a chief of Heretaunga, has sent a remarkable letter to tho Hon. James Carroll. Not having heard of the energetic measures now being taken by the Native Minister to give a record demonstration of welcome tq the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, Hana’s soul is troubled, and he delivers himself of a remarkable epistle, from which I extract the following:—- “ The Hon. Hemi Kara: May you live long to perform the important duties incumbent upon you on behalf of tho people. Great indeed is the news which has regaled our ears, no less than the coming of the illustrious Rongo ma tane, a godlike visitor to this land. -Well, then, what are we doing ? Shall we be as the drowsy eel-fisher, nodding in unconcern, or shall we put on the watchfulness of the war party, over on the footsteps of action ? If wc are ’to be alive, and 'on the warpath, you will have to sound the alarm. Rouse up the pa, and put life into your people. Sleepers, arise 1 Already the bird is on tho perch, decked for the fray. They are upon us, perhaps emboldened by the spirit of Tuaha! May they find us prepared. You ’have urged the people to bo one. Therefore, don, thou, the toroa’s plume, and lead us into qe'tlqn.” Note; ‘Rongo i ma tarie, one of the greatest Divinities of i Pqlynesia; Tu, the war god ; Toroa, the albatross..
