Considerable interest was manifested in the Harbor Board election yesterday for the return of two members to represent the Borough, and polling was much heavier than at the election held last month. Quigley acted as Returning Officer, Mr J. M. Cumming as clerk, and Messrs Wvllie, Ratcliffe and Murray as scrutineers. Tho result of tho poll was announced shortly after eight o’clock, Messrs Tucker and Whinray being declared elected. Tho number of votes recorded for each candidate was as follows :
Tucker, William Henry ... 870 Whinray, James 843 Pettie, William 262 Joyce, Edward Pattricks ... 240 Harris, Frank ... ... 128 A good crowd had assembled outsido the polling booth to hear tho result of tho election, and after tho announcement had been made by the Returning Officer, Captain Tucker made a short speech, returning thanks. Ho said: “I heartily thank thoso ladies and gentlemen who have placed mo in this proud position. (Cheers.) I am well aware that this is not attributable to my own merits, but to the kindness of my supporters. (Cheers.) On Mr Whinray’s behalf I beg to offer his thanks to you also.” (Cheers.) Mr Whinray also returned thanks, remarking : “ I thank you for the very cordial support given to mo this day, which I take as a reflection on tho attempt made to disparago me by Mr Lysnar in the press without giving mo an opportunity of replying. I thank you for your kindness, and shall do my best to merit your confidence.” (Gheers).
