COMPLAINTS TO THE PREMIER.

MAGISTRATES AND SLY-GROG

SELLING.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. A number of AVesloyan clergymen and laymen, now in tho city for the Conference, interviewed the Premier to-day, and drew his attention to tho fact that a Justice of the Peace was connected with certain sly-grog selling offences at Tapanui. They asked that this particular Justice who had countenanced the breach of law should have his name removed from the roll.

The Premier promised to make enquiry. The deputation also drew attention to the fact that Mr Stanford, S.M., in convicting a sly-grog seller at Stratford, had remarked that those who opposed the introduction of licenses in the district were as much to blame as grog-sellers, and ought to bear part of the penalty of. fine or imprisonment. The deputation thought such remarks should be met with reprimand.

Mr Seddon, in reply, said that ho could not interfere with the magistracy, except in such cases, as necessitated the services of the occupant of the Bench being dispensed with.
