MAORI CHARGED WITH KILLING |HIS£|\VIFE. By Association.

At tiie SupijemeriCjiourt, before the Chief Justice, a Maori- riVan named Rawiri To Ua was charged with murder, that lie did on or about December 27th, at Miranda, kill and slay one Hilii Kiwi (his wife). Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Mr Tole, Crown solicitor, said that prisoner was charged with the murder of his wife. They were riding on horseback, returning to their homes, when it is alleged the woman was attacked by her husband, and so beaten that she died. A Maori boy wlio was out looking for sheep, would give evidence to the effect that he saw the man knock the woman about, and dash her head on the stones of the beach. Very serious wounds were observed on the woman’s head and body. When she was discovered she was brought back to the store in an unconscious condition, and died early next morning. The woman was buried, but tiie body was exhumed, and it was found that a wound at the back of the car sustained by the woman would have been sufficient to cause death. Tho case is proceeding. Later. —ln the ease against Rawiri, charged with wife murder, the defence is that the woman’s death was caused by a fall from a horse, and being kicked by the horse after falling.
