Attempted Murder at Waverley.
A BANK CLERK’S NARROW ESCAPE.
MAN' COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wanganui, last- night. At the Waverley Court yesterday James Burns was committed for trial for the attempted murder of Mr H. P. Hickson on the sth, at Waverley. Mr Hickson, a clerk of the Bank of New South Wales at Patea, about ten miles from Waverley, was returning to Patea after closing the branch of the Bank at Waverley. He was carrying a bag containing .£3IS cash and £241 in cheques. He hoard some one following him, and on looking round Bourns fired a revolver point-blank at him five or six yards away. Hickson jumped to the side of the road when another shot was fired, one piercing his overcoat, and the powder going on his ear.
A constable lucidly made an appearance, and Bourns decamped, hiding in a swamp, where he was eventually captured. A revolver with two chambers empty was found near by. Accused worked at Waverley 18 mouths ago as a rouse-about, at which time the Bank was broken into and £56 stolen. On the sixth of December last a futile attempt was made to break into the Bank at tlio same place.
