General Synod.

At the evening session there was a lively debate over a resolution brought down by the Bench of Bishops to the effect that auy action as regards the Pacific Islands must have the concurrence of the Bench and Synod. This was construed as a vote of censure on the Bishop of Dunedin, as the Bishop of'Wellington, in introducing the’ motion, stated that all other Bishops disagreed with the Bishop of Dunedin’s action in Tonga with reference to Mr Shirley Baker.
The Bishop of Melanesia made an earnest appeal for the. maintenance of the present compact, or an understanding with other churches as to spheres of influence in the Pacific.
Finally a compromise was arrived at, the Bishops being asked to frame a scheme which, while maintaining the present understanding, should llot prevent an extension of the work of the church in desirable directions.
There was another decidedly warm discussion on the' proposal to cancel Mr Smallfield’s lease of St. John’s College, Auckland, so as to re-open it as a theological college under a -warden who would give his whole time to the work.
