A Desperate Prisoner.
TWO ATTEMPTS AT SUICIDE. [B? TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, last night. A man 'named John Burke O’Brien, who has been frequently before the Police Court, was arrested by the Lyttelton police for drunkenness last night. Shortly after he had been placed in the cell the sergeant going to visit him found that he had taken off his shirt, and twisted it into a rope with whioh he was trying to strangle himself. The garment was of course promptly taken from him, and the sergeant left, determined to look into his cell frequently. It was well that he did, for on his next visit he found that O’Brien had taken the leather laces out of his boots and tied them round his neck so tightly that he was in danger of strangulation. The sergeant took out his knife and instantly had them cut and | taken off. O’Brien made no further attempts on his life. To-day the Bench sentenced him to a month’s imprisonment for habitual drunkenness, and on the charge of attempted suicide remanded him to be dealt with by Mr Bishop, S.M.
