WARTIME SHIPPING

AMERICAN ACTIVITIES Headquarters of the United States War Shipping Administration have been established in-Auckland, with a sub-office in Wellington. Formerly port captain at San Francisco for the Matson Line, Captain M. J. Bulger is the New Zealand representative oi the Administration. ’ His assistant it an Aucklander, Mr. A. E. Playle, formerly the manager of Henderson and Macfarlane, Limited, the Auckland Matson agents. Mr. Playle recently returned from Sydney, where he held a similar position with ,the Administration.

The Administration was in charge of all United States merchant shipping in this area, said Captain Bulger. A. survey of the ports of Auckland, Wellington, Napier and New Plynouth has been made by him. Facilities had been found adequate and .the oorts were adaptable for the fast working of American ships. Captain Bulger intends to survey the South Island ports right down to Bluff in a short time.

“We expect .the people of this country to co-operate in order to accomplish our effort in turning .these ships about quickly,” said Captain Bulger. That was of paramount importance.
