“A CRUEL HOAX”

NEWS OF LOST CRUISER i , • SYDNEY, Jan, 6. The Australian Intelligence Department has been instructed to trace the origin of a communication sent to the next-of-kin of the complement of the lost cruiser H.M.A.S. Sydney declaring that favourable news could be expected. The communication is described by the Minister for the Navy, Mr. N. J. Makin, as a cruel hoax. He said he was taking a serious view of the matter. Mr. Makin has announced that the Australian Navy Board is-co-operat-ing with naval officers representing the United States in the Southwestern Pacific.
