ESCAPE FROM ITALIANS
LIBYAN BATTLE INCIDENT His capture by and escape from the enemy during the fighting in Libya are described in a letter received from Lance-Corporal G. S. McMillan, formerly of Auckland. While engaged in transporting Italian prisoners back fi'om the British lines he was overtaken by a German Panzer unit and taken to a prison camp, where he lived for a week under poor conditions. food and water being scarce. As pressure against the enemy lines was increased they decided to use the 270 British prisoners in the camp as a screen to a retreat through a narrow gap that had been forced in the British lines. The prisoners- were marched ahead of the enemy, and until they were recognised they were heavily shelled by their own artillery. The shelling, however, scared away their Italian guards and" the men made a break for the British positions. A few, however, wbre killed by rifle fire from the Italian guards and some others by shrapnel.
