BETTER WARPLANES

NEW BRITISH EFFORT SUPERIOR TO, GERMAN LONDON, Dec. 3. British designers ace doing their utmost to turn out warplanes which will be better than the new types expected from Germany, says the Manchester Guardian’s military correspondent, Major Robertson.

The war, says the writer, vindicated Britain’s courageous decision to adopt eight machine-guns instead of cannon on fighters, and power-operated gun turrets on bombers.

“There is not the slightest doubt that our equipment is superior,” adds Major Robertson. “The power turrets permit our bombers often to shoot down fighters, but the German bombers are forced to rely entirely on speed, which has proved insufficient.

“Our multi-gunned fighters are more successful than we had hoped. The French fighters are better than the German Messerschmitts. Oufs §re better than the French.” The experts, says the aeronautical (•orrespondent of the News Chronicle, regard the Messerschmitt as a “vicious” machine, idiots of which are conscious of its inferiority

On the other hand the Nazi bombers are good, but their gunners are not able to fire sideways, because thf air pressure at that angle is too tremendous for hand-operated gun turrets.'
