The report reviewed an extensive building programme during the year, the most important building being the new, Gisborne intermediate school. Buildings valued at £19,774 were completed during the year, with an actual expenditure of £11,756 up to November 30, 1939. On completed native and post-primary building works ‘he board spent £13,558 up to November 30. In hand at present were general school works estimated to cost £51,787 and native and post-primary works to cost £34,890. Expenditure incurred on those works up to the end of November was £9817. Grants totalling £1656 had been authorised for further works, mainly of a maintenance character.
From fanuary 1 to November 30, the board spent £71,244 on building of orations Tea chers’ Residences “One of the most important of our activities has been the extensive programme of improvements to teachers’ residences,” Mr. Maddison said. ‘ The work lias been practically completed in the district from Napier st ulhwards. and the programme is being extended now to embrace the residences in the northern areas. The residences which have been completed are of a standard which compares favourably with the standard o: convenience and comfort now regarded as essential. The amount expended to date on this pr •itramme is £1708.” On replacement of obsolete school desks the amount expended to November 30 was £1143. The amount expended to date on improvements to residences was £I7OB. The total expenditure this year on conveyance and board of children up to November 30 was £13.419, with £12,747 for the whole of 1938. Surplus of Teachers “The supply of teachers has been adequate during the year,” said Mr. Maddison, ‘and it has not been necessary to employ married women teachers for relieving work as in the preceding year. There also will be a surplus of teachers available from the beginning of 1940, although the enlistment of our young men in the defence forces is a factor which will affect 'he position during next year.” “The total expenditure for 11 months of the current year is £253,867, being £21,326 more than for the whole of 1938. Our expenditure for the 12 months of 1939 is estimated therefore to exceed that of 1938 by £46.000. In view of war and economic conditions, however, we must expect considerable curtailment in the future, especially in our building programme. Nevertheless, there is. still a lot of building work to be done, particularly in the replacement of our older schools.”
