MOTUHORA SCHOOL

BREAK-UP FUNCTION

SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

(Herald Correspondent.)

One. of the happiest functions held during the year in Motuhora was the school breaking-up function, held on Thursday evening, the hall in the township being fully taxed by the attendance of pupils and their parents, and by interested residents of the locality. A well-chosen programme of items was presented by the scholars from a stage which had been beautifully decorated by Mrs. A. O. K. Sim, who, with her husband, headmaster of the school, gave much encouragement to the performers and was in part responsible for the success of the function.

A Christmas tree laden with toys and other gifts was a central feature of the decorations, and when Father Christmas appeared to the accompaniment of sleigh-bells and the clatter of reindeer hoofs, the excitement among the young scholars was great. Every child received a gift from the tree, and many also received prizes for school work during the year, the chairman of the school committee, Mr. W. J. Rowe, making the distribution of school awards, and complimenting the headmaster and staff upon the results achieved during the year. The headmaster acknowledged, on behalf of the statf, the chairman’s compliments and also the great assistance he had received in connection with the concert from a number of Motuhora residents.

The programme, for which Mrs. Stewart played accompaniments, included the following individual items: Recitation, "Johnny Reads the Newspaper,” Keith Rowe; “Gorch Yesero,” a Dalmatian folk song, by Jessie and Maria Zurach; recitation, “Measles,” F. Parkes; recitation, “At the Seaside,” M. Jackson; folk song, “Syretan Sujetu," by Jessie and Maria Zurach; and a recitation, “Johnny Washes His Neck,” Keith Rowe.
