SCHOOL YEAR ENDS

GISBORNE CENTRAL FAREWELL TO TEACHER MISS BAKER LEAVING An informal farewell gathering took place at the Gisborne Central School yesterday, when presentations were made by the teaching staff andthe school committee to Miss E. A. Baker, who has resigned in view of her forthcoming marriage. Miss Baker had .been a member of the staff for four years. ■“Words fail to express our appreciation of her service here,” said the headmaster, Mr. J. E. Shimmin, who warmly praised the many attributes shown by Miss Baker as a teacher and in her associations with the staff. She had spared no effort in furthering the interests of her pupils and had assisted greatly in the cementing of good fellowship amongst the members of the staff. On behalf of the staff, he presented Miss Baker with an electric waffle iron and extended to her good wishes for her future happiness. IMr. J. H. Sunderland, chairman of the committee, said that the members knew that the whole staff, under the leadership of Mr. Shimmin had rendered excellent service, and he wished to express appreciation of that service. The Speaker joined with Mr. Shimmin in extending good wishes to Miss Baker and, -on behalf of the committee, he presented her with a piece of crockery. In returning thanks for the presents, Miss Baker expressed her appreciation of the kindnesses shown to her and of the valued friendships she had made. At the school breaking-up ceremony which followed, dux medals were presented by Mr. Sunderland to Peter Hollis and 'Neil Dow, who tied for the dux of the school. The girls’ dux medal was awarded to Margaret Strawbridge.
