WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MR. & MRS. C. W. HUGHES MANGAPAPA RESIDENTS The sixtieth anniversary of their wedding was celebrated yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hughes, Mangapapa, with a quiet family gathering, at which they were the recipients of a beautiful wedding cake and messages of congratulations from relatives and friends. Among the messages received during the day was one from the private secretary to the King, stating:—‘’The King and Queen send you hearty congratulations and good wishes on your diamond wedding day.” The Governor - General, Viscount Galway, sent the following greetings: "Lady Galway and I send you our warmest congratulations and best wishes on the celebration to-day of the sixtieth anniversary of your marriage.” Other messages included those from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J] Savage, and the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P. Married in England Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were married in St. Paul’s Church, Stratford road, Hulme, Manchester, England, by the Rev. Mr. Daniels, and they lived in that locality until 20 years ago. A portion of their family already had come to New Zealand, and those remaining in England were anxious to join the others here, so Mr. and Mrs. Hughes and the rest of their family came to his country in 1919, settling in Gisborne, where they have remained ever since. In England Mr. Hughes followed the occupation of upholsterer, and worked at his trade in Gisborne until his retirement some years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes are still active, parteieularly Mrs. Hughes. Family Gathering Because some members of the family are living away from Gisborne and others are temporarily absent, the celebration yesterday was in the form of a small family gathering. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes had four sons and three daughters, as well as 25 grandchildren ;uad four great-grand-children. The sons and daughters are:—Mr. Herbert Hughes, Valley road; Mr. William Hughes, Valley road, Mr. Arthur Hughes, Aberdeen road; Mr. James Hughes, Salisbury road; Mrs. A. Towers, Ormond road; I Mrs. J. Auld, Coromandel; and Mrs. E. j Coham, Birkenhead, Auckland.
