The Berlin radio reports that German submarines appeared off the west coast of Spain and sank a British ship of 14,000 tons by gunfire.
The Paris paper Epoque declares that the German Navy prepared bases and stored food and fuel for raiding units in the Azores, where surveying was carried out for months under the guise of ordinary naval visits.
The Azores Islands belong to Portugal, from which they are about 830 miles distant to the west. Extending over some 400 miles, and having an area of 922 square miles, the three clusters comprise St. Michael’s and St. Mary’s, with Formigas in the southeast; Flores and Corvo in the northwest; Terceira. Rico, Fayal, St. George and Graciosa in the centre. The few secure harbours include Angra do Heroisomo, the .capital of the Azores, on Terceira. Porta Delgrada, the capital of St. Michael’s, and Horln. the capital of Fayal. The population is about 232,000. In 1591. off Flores, the English ship Revenge, under Sir Richard Grenville, met the Spanish fleet.
