PRESIDENT’S FOURS
GISBORNE ROWING CLUB TRIALS TO J. GEMMELL. Crews to take part in the Gisborne Rowing Club’s series of races for the cliff presented by the president, Mr. C. W. Muir, have been selected and will go into training immediately. The event will be decided early next month over the mile and a quarter course. The following are the crews 'for training:— Morning.—S. Allen, str., C. Armstrong, L. Osmond and J. Francis; A. M. Terry, str., R. Walter, J. Wilkins and C. Perry. Evening.—K. Easton, str., J. Hankey, P. Sceats and L. Ellmers; A. F v Allen, str., G. Owen, A. Nicholls and R. Taylor; T. N. Bright, str., F. Henry. R. Ogilvic and J. Perrett; J. G. Gemmell,'str., K. Ford, T. Bolton and T. Moughan; L. J. Winstanley, str., G. Montgomery, T. Pucldick, and I. Menzies; T. Williams, str., E. W. Bright, L. Franks and R'. Donald. The final of the First Trial Fours was rowed last evening on the Taruheru River course, tidal and weather conditions making it necessary to row 7 the event upstream to the Roebuck road bridge. J. G. Gemmell, str., T. Williams, L. Franks and F. Henry beat R. Mahon, str., R. Walter, J. Wilkins and C. Perry by a length. Although Gemmell was rowing a slower stroke than his opponent, he forged ahead to have an advantage of a length at Derby street. Mahon made a good bid towards the end of the race, but Gemmell nnd the situation in hand and pulled away again slightly.
