STOCKS DEPLETED
GOODS COMMANDEERED IMPORTERS CONCERNED Importers were concerned at the action of the Government in commandeering stocks for defence purposes, said the Bureau of Importers in a recent statement. Already many importers had had their stocks depleted by the action of the Government in seizing stocks for military camps and other defence purposes.
“As Mr. Nash raised a £5.000,000 defence loan while in London, it is suggested that when any goods are commandeered for defence purposes the Government should immediately arrange for the Customs Department to issue the importer with an import license equal to the quantity of goods taken,” says the statement. "Further, it is considered that as such commandeers are a direct charge on defence, sufficient sterling allocation should be made from the defence loan to permit of immediate payment to the exporters. It is unreasonable to embarrass both the New Zealand importer and the overseas exporter by offering ‘deferred payment’ when the Dominion has available ,115.000.000 for defence purposes. A number of instances have been reported where goods have been commandeered by the Government and replacement licenses refused.”
