OCTOBER FIGURES ' HEAVIER THAN 1938 The October rainfall ai most places on the Coast' was greater than that recorded in the same month last yen' and in some instances the contrast was marked.!'The tallies were highest in the northern part of the district, and one of the biggest was 7.07 in. recorded at- Matarau, Hicks Bay, for 15 rain days, compared with 3.01 in. for 10 wet days in October, 1938. On one day Matarau gauged 2.34 in„ and that reading, which was taken on October 17, is nearly lin. higher than the total rainfall experienced in Gisborne in October. The recorder states that it was a good month at Hicks Bay for pasture growth, sufficient rain falling without causing inter-ference-to. seasonal work. There were no frosts during the period. 'Matarau has a tally of 57.36 in. of rain for the first 10 months of the year, against 114.23 in. for the corresponding period last year. Pakihiroa. inland from Ruatoria, lias had even more rain, with an aggregate of 61.87 in. for the 10 months, compared with 132.33 in. in 1938. The Gisborne total for the year to date is only 24.84 in.

A total of 5.85 in. of rain fell at Pakihiroa in October, when there were lii days with rain, while in 1938 the October reading was 1.46 in. for nine rain days.

Riiangarchu, .inland from Tokoinnru Bay. experienced 2,41 in. of rain for 29 wet days, compared with 1.38 in. for six rain days in October. 1938. Since January 1 the station has recorded 44.7Gin* of rain, against 109.29 in. for the first 10 months-of 1933.

Tolaga Bay had a total of 2.83 in. foils ram days last month, whereas in October, 1938, the tally was 1.19 in. for eight wet days.
