PARKS AND DRIVE

CENTENNIAL EFFORTS SUBSIDY ON WAGES * For the purpose of helping with Gisborne's centennial effort along the Waikanae waterfront, 26 additional men have been made available by the Social Security Department under the scheme of 100 per cent wages subsidy for the Centennial Marine Park, at the west of Salisbury road, the Centennial Marine Drive, extending westwards from Grey street, and for Waikanae Centennial Park, the main beach area, cast of Grey street. In regard to the Centennial Marine Drive, the Gisborne Borough Council was advised last night that a special commitment of £100(5 had been allocated, and that amount was not to be exceeded. The question of the continuation of the work after the expiry of three months and the rate of subsidy to be made available would be reviewed in the light of existing conditions.

The Thirty-Thousand Club wrote recommending that the new drive be called Centennial Marine Drive • and that in the meantime no definite move be made with regard to the naming of the new reserve area until some suitable title can be found that will not be confused with the Centennial Memorial Park.—The proposal was agreed to. Guy Fawkes Celebration The Thirty-Thousand Club sought the assistance of the council’s traffic inspectors to control the traffic on Saturday night on the occasion of the Guy Fawkes celebration. It was suggested that Grey street, from the railway line lo the beach, should be closed to traffic, as on the previous occasion.—The request was acceded to. The borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, reported that during the fortnight the shifting of earth mechanically on the Waikanae Marine Drive had been continued, with the result that practically all heavy earthwork between Salisbury road and Stanley road is completed. Sixteen Scheme I'3 labourers were now engaged on procuring suitable covering for sand faces and the formation of an 18ft. width carriage-way and footpaths.
