NO XMAS PICTURES

COUNCIL DECISION

REQUEST BY THEATRES

POSITION OF EMPLOYEES

No pictures arc to be shown in Gisborne on Christmas Day, as a result of a unanimous decision of the Borough Council last night. The decision followed applications made by 1 lie managements of the three picture theatres, Ihe letter from the Amalagmaled Theatres, Limited, stating that no employee would be hskecl to work unless he or she desired to do so, and award rates for Christmas Day would be paid.

The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that he did not think pictures should be shown on Christmas Day, for employees were entitled to their Christmas Day oil'. In the past the council had permitted the showing of films only at night. He moved that the request be declined. Cr. E. Harris seconded the motion. Cr. J. H. Hall said that he had suggested previously that the screenings be permitted if none of the regular employees were brought back to work, but he had found that that was impracticable.

The motion to prohibit Christmas pictures was carried unanimously.
