EMERGENCY PLANS

SUPPLIES OF WATER

RELIANCE ON WELLS

TESTS OF CAPACITY

With a view to ascertaining what supplies of water yre available in the town in the event <>l the usual sources being interrupted in a period of emergency, the Gisborne Borough Council last night authorised the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, to carry out tests in regard to wells in the town.

The matter was the subject of a brief report submitted to the council by the engineer, when lie sought authority to spend a small sum on the work.

“In connection with investigations for a supply of water should a natural or other disaster occur in this district,” Mr. Thomas stated, "it is found that wells to some extent may have to be relied upon, and until a further investigation as to the yield of some of the wells in the borough has been ascertained the extent of their support in a crisis is not known. Authority is askfed to carry out pumping, which it is estimated should cost approximately £2o.”’

Mr. Thomas also reported that the pilot plant at the Waipaoa River had been kept in operation, and a further examination carried out by the Health Department found the treated water satisfactory. Mr. W. G. Tobe, Melbourne, had left on a tour of the South Island, and intended returning to Gisborne before leaving for Australia.
