The New York Daily News says that the Department of Justice is investigating impressive evidence that the Germans sank the British liner Athenia because they were convinced she carried £4,400,000 worth of gold metal and £7,400,000 worth of negotiable securities.
It is asserted that the information came from sources close to two great German salvaging companies, one of which is the Krupp corporation.
It is added that the Canadian representatives of. the Athenia's owners do not know whether the vessel carried treasi |v e.
