MODERN PLANT

CORDIAL FACTORY D. J. BARRY, LIMITED RECORD OF PROGRESS One of the oldest establishments in Gisborne, D. J. Barry, Limited’s, cordial and aerated water factory, situated at the corner of Aberdeen and Stanley roads, first commenced business about 1880 under .the proprietorship of the late Mr. W. F. Crawford and came under the present management in 1897. The years of experience, together, with the progressive policy of its proprietors, are reflected in' the high quality of its products, and in its modern plant. In slow-moving plants such as these where depreciation is correspondingly slow it is" difficult to keep pace with the manv improvements which the present century has brought forth without incurring heavy losses by the scrapping of obsolete plant.

D. J. Barry, Limited, took full advantage some years ago of the opportunity” of l-uilding their present modern facmev when their old building was nciuded in the purchase of their brewery by New Zealand Breweries. Limited. Their present factory is a modern brick building with limewashed walls and its layout was designed to cope with all the latest plant for this trade. It is a credit to the proprietors. Cleanliness has been closely studied throughout and in particular the floor is very solidly constructed' so as to avoid cracks, which harbour germs, and it is well drained so as to avoid water lying around after washing down. It complies in every way with the Pure Foods Act and the requirements of the health authorities.

A visit by the Herald’s representative revealed that the products are produced under ideal conditions. The use of the best materials and great cleanliness are the keynotes of the business. Care and accuracy in mixing the syrups from the best essences are taken to ensure unvarying quality and flavour in all the many drinks marketed by .this business.

Automatic Machinery

Bottle-washing is carried out by first giving every bottle a thorough soaking in a strong steriliser and then brushing with strong brushes, both inside and outside, and finally rinsing with pure water. That the bottle can only be as clean as the water it is rinsed with, js the slogan of this department. From the washer Ihc bottles pass to the latest model universal automatic syruper, filler and crowncr. These three operations are performed by only one handling of the bottle.

This machine was manufactured by Hayward, Tyler and Company, Ltd., an English -firm of high repute in the bottling trade, and it performs the three functions of svruping. filling and crowning. The bottles first receive the exact quantity of syrup and then bv an arm automatically controlled the bottle is moved to the filler, where it is filled with carbon ated water, and then by a further automatic device the bottle moves to the crowncr, where it is hermetically sealed. • . , ■,

Every care is taken to ensure that the water is correctly carbonated consistently to the same pressure. This is assured by D. J. Barry, Limited, making their own carbonic acid gas, and the water is evenly gassed by passing it through a ■ carbonating machine, another product of Hayward, Tyler and Company, Limited.
