OBITUARY
HAWKE’S BAY PIONEER MRS. MARTHA MOSS Another of the few remaining nonagenarians of Hawke's Bay passed away on Monday in Mrs. Martha Moss, of Whakatu. an early pioneer of the district and well known throughout the province. Bom in Essex. England, in 1848, Mrs. iMoss came to New Zealand with her husband in 1873, and the visit was originally intended to be merely a honeymoon trip.' So enamoured were they with the country, however, and so confident that the then far-away colony of the Motherland would be developed, that they decided to settle here and took up residence in Napier. After- a few years, Mr. and Mrs. Moss essayed on farming ventures and moved about the Hastings-Napier district, eventually deciding upon the Whakatu area, where they lived together until Mr. Moss died 17 years ago. Mrs. Moss continued to reside at Whakatu. There are left four daughters, Mrs. R Farmer. Napier, Mrs. C. Cunningham. Wellington. Mrs. F. Kermode. Gisborne, and Mrs. H. Pulford, Clive. Two sons died within the past two yea rs.
The death occurred recently in Makara, in hir ninety-first year, of Mrs. Fanny Alice Hawkins. Born in Taita in April. 1849. she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Trotter. Her mother, born in Glasgow, was a member of one of the first families to settle in the Hull Valley, having been brought to New Zealand by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Burnett, in the Bengal Merchant. which arrived at Wellington oil February 20. 1840. The Troter family, arriving a few months later, also settled in the lintt Valley.
