Last Night's Forecast General situation: A deep depression is centred south-east of the Dominion, while a secondary, which formed in the Tasman, is moving on to the North Island. Forecast: Winds, moderate southeasterly in the far south; elsewhere moderate to strong northerly to westerly, changing soon to southwesterly in the north and soutncrly directions probably becoming general during the next 24 to 48 hours. Seas; In New Zealand waters, rough on the West Coast and about Cook Strait; moderate elsewhere, but rising about Foveaux Strait. Eastern Tasman Sea: Fresh to strong southerly winds becoming general; seas, rough. Wcathoi. Fair at first east of the Southern Alps, otherwise unsettled, with rain at times in most districts: improving later, however, in Westland. Temperatures: Cooler to-morrow. To-day’s North Island Report Heavy rain fell in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland districts last night and for the 24 hours- ended at 9 a.m. today Onotiki recorded 1.30 in., Auckland f.oßin., and Cape Maria Van Diemen 1.24 in. Rain was still falling this morning in Opotiki and North Auckland. Gisborne reported a failing “glass” this morning and the barometric pressure elsewhere was lower than yesterday. The temperature reached (56 degrees at Tauranga. and other readings were: Napier, 59 degrees; Opotiki, 58; Wellington, 50: Auckland and Gisborne, 55. Strong north-westerly winds prevailed over the southern portion of the island, but elsewhere the winds were light and variable. The sea was rough at East Cape and on the Wellington coast, with a slight to moderate swell at other points along the East Const.
