RIVER WATER TESTS

CHEMICAL EXAMINATION FULL REPORT SHORTLY DEPARTMENT SURPRISED Results of chemical examinations of the water treated by the pilot nitration plant on the banks of the Waipaoa River are expected shortly, according to a statement made to the Gisborne Borough Council by the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, last night. “The pilot plant has been in operation for some days,” Mr. Thomas stated, “and although very turbid conditions have resulted in the river since the starting up of the plant, a clear and sparkling effluent always has been obtained after filtration.

“The Health Department is carrying out both bacteriological and chemical examinations of the treated water, and a full report dealing with the results of-these examinations and the various methods of treatment will be submitted as soon as possible.”

In a verbal report, Mr. Thomas said that preliminary tests revealed extraordinarily good results, and the Health Department officials were so surprised that they went . immediately to the pilot plant to take further samples for the purpose of checking up on the original tests.
