TENNIS RANKINGS
ENGLISH WRITER’S VIEWS R. L. RIGGS PLACED FIRST In his list of world rankings, the tennis writer of The Times places the Australians John Bromwich second and Adrian Quist third. The order given by the writer is:— Mem—l, R. L. Riggs (United States); 2, J. E. Bromwich (Australia); 3, A. K. Quist (Australia); 4, D. McNeill (United Stales); 5, F. Puncec (Yugoslavia); 6, E. T. Cooke (United States); 7 H. Henkel (Germany); 8, H. W. Austin (Great Britain); 9, W. van Horn (United States); 10, F. Kukuljcvic (Yugoslavia). Women.—l. Miss A. Marble (United Slates); 2, Miss K. Stammers (Great Britain); 3, Miss H. Jacobs (United States); 4, Mrs. H. Sperling (Denmark); 5, Madame B. Mathieu (France); 6, Mile. J. Jedrzejowska (Poland); 7, Mrs. S. P. Fabyan (United States); 8, Miss R. M. Hardwick (Great Britain); 9, Miss V. Scott (Great Britain); and 10, Miss D. Bundy (United States).
Referring to his ranking of Bromwich. the writer says that earlier it seemed that, in the absence of Cramm, the Australian would be the natural successor to Budge. “Quist is as gallant a little player as there is. He went out unexpectedly in the United States singles championship, but he came to the rescue in the Davis Cup, which was won by the Australian pair playing as one man.” The writer questions whether America would have lost the Davis Cup if it had appreciated van Horn, who later beat Bromwich in a semi-final of the United Slates singles.
