SATISFACTORY YEAR
GISBORNE SWIMMING CLUB FUNDS SHOW INCREASE The satisfactory state of the finances, which show an increase on the funds in hand last year, is mentioned in the report to be presented on Wednesday, October 25, to the annual, meeting of members of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club. A full part was taken by the club members in the learn-10-swim campaign and they materially assisted to teach the 326 learners. Six club records were broken during the season, the list of new holders being as follows: —50yds. women’s free style, Miss H. McKnight, 32sec.; 100 yds. men's fi-ee style, D. Lange and S. Y. Dodgshun, equal, 60sec.; 220yds. men’s breaststroke, S. Thompson, 3min. 8 l-ssec.; 100yds. backstroke, A. H. Dc Costa, lmin. 17 3-ssec.; 440yds. men’s free style, K. Morse, smin. 55 3-ssec.: 100yds. intermediate girls’free style, Miss J. McGregor, 72sec. List of Cup Winners Club cups were won as follows: — Forster Cup. Miss IT. McKnight; De Costa Cup. H. Holmes; Stoneham Cup, G. Thompson; Masonic Cup and C. Adair Memorial Cup, K. Morse; Carroll Cup and W. Barrington Miller Cup, D. Lange; McKinley Cup and ITeeney Cup, Miss J. McGregor; Gordon Cup, Miss K. Henderson; Lockie Cup. R. Wallace: Hendricks Rose Bowl, D. Caldwell and Miss N. Henderson; Allan De Costa Cup, D. Lange and S. Thompson: Wells Cup, I. Juson. At the New Zealand intermediate national championships the club was represented by R. Clay and I. Juson, Juson being placed third in the dive. Two Hawke’s Bay Records A Hawke’s Bay record for the 220 yds. backstroke was established by S. Thompson at the provincial championships, and Miss J. McGregor was also in form lo reduce the time for the 220yds. intermediate girls’ free style. R. Clay won the Colin Kirkley Cup for the second consecutive time and the club was successful for the first time in Hawke’s Bay in winning the Ferguson Cup.
During the season of the surf branch’s activities two persons in distress at the Waikanae Beach were assisted to the shore. The men’s surf team won the Adair Cup in an event on the Wainui Beach, and the club’s congratulations were extended to the Wainui club on its win in the Nicholls’ Cup event. The following live-saving awards were gained by members: — Bronze medallions, 32; intermediate, 11: awards of merit, 2.
