MR. WILLIAM EVANS
EARLY BUSH SETTLER The death of Mr. William Evans, occurred, in the Memorial Home yesterday afternoon, and removed one who had been in the Gisborne district for the past 45 years and in New Zealand for possibly 70 years. Mr. Evans was born in Wales 89 years ago. In his young days he went to sea, but while still a young man came to New Zealand, and was engaged in saw-milling in. the FortyMile Bush for many years before coming to Gisborne in the early 'nineties. During his early days in Gisborne lie became well known as a carrier between Gisborne and Whatutu. being regarded as an expert pack-man and wagon driver. Following that he was farming at Makauri until his retirement. He has not been in good health for the past two years. His wife predeceased him 39 years ago, and only one son, Mr. W. Evans, Gisborne, is left to mourn his loss. The internment took place at the Makarakn cemetery this afternoon, the funeral leaving Cochrane’s private chapel.
