MR. OLIVER GOLDSMITH
FORMER GISBORNEITE RETIRED CIVIL SERVANT i Advice has been received in Gisborne of the death in Auckland a few days ago of Mr. Oliver Goldsmith, a retired civil servant who for many years was associated with the work of the Lands’ Department in this district. Mr. Goldsmith had suffered an injury in an accident, which led to consequences far more serious than were first foreseen, and he underwent a major operation late last week. Born in Gisborne, Mr. Goldsmith was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs. C. G. Goldsmith. He was educated in the Central School, ana became prominent in athletics ano gymnasium work, being a colleague of Mr. W. Barrington Miller in the organisation of many amateur performances. He joined the Lands Department here as a cadet, and later went into the field with surveyors, eventually qualifying in that capacity. Continuing in the employment of the Lands Department, ho was transferred to Invercargill, where he completed his service and retired in 192(i then having been for many years chief draughtsman in the Invercargill office. In his retirement he lived at Auckland, enjoying excellent health until last year, when an accident occurred which it is believed led to his death.
lie is survived by Mrs. Goldsmith and by five brothers and two sisters, Mr. Ernest Goldsmith, Auckland, Mr. Charles Goldsmith. Gisborne, Mr. George Goldsmith, Hastings, Mr. Reginald Goldsmith, Gisborne, and Mr. Neville Goldsmith, Rotorua, and the Misses Edith and Jessie Goldsmith, Auckland. Much sympathy will be ex tended to the widow and other relatives.
