GOOD FRUIT CROPS

GISBORNE PROSPECTS MOST TREES HEALTHY NO FJREBLIGHT YET 'Prospects for the coming crops of both pip and stone fruit in the Gisborne district are good, according to a statement made to-day by the Government orchard instructor, Mr. J. D. Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy stated that trees on the commercial orchards were healthy, and there was no appearance yet of fireblight. The disease appeared to have been well cleaned up last season in the apple and pear trees, and while precautions were being taken again this year it appeared that any infection during the coming season would be light.

There was every indication of both pip and stone fruit trees setting a heavy crop. There were slight signs of brown rot blossom infection on peaches and nectarines, but this was not expected ‘to interfere with the crop in any, way, for this probably would have the effect of thinning the crops to the desired level without so much help from the orchardists.

Owing to the mild winter, there were practically no signs of root trouble, except a small amount remaining from the abnormally wet winter last year.
