Britain’s preparedness and the spirit of the people on the eve of war created a tremendous impression on visitors, said Mr. G. Morton Smith, general manager of John Burns and Company, Limited, who has returned after eight months abroad. He said that people from other countries who were in England in August were filled with admiration, at the way the situation was handled and the united efforts made. He paid a glowing tribute to the women, who were helping in all ways, and the inspiring way in which the young men had accepted conscription showed their det £ "\mination to play their part. “I was impressed by their splendid physique,” added Mr. Smith. “The organisation of factories for war was a rem'arkable contrast to 1914, and the strength of the air force revealed many finely-equipped aerodromes which seemed to encircle the country.”

He added that 'n France there was a similar spirit.
